Flying Colours made its first appearance as a concerto for alto saxophone and concert band. Conducted by Captain Brian O. Walden, the work received its world premiere performance on 7th January, 2011 at the 34th International Saxophone Symposium, Washington DC, USA, with Barry Cockcroft as featured soloist with the United States Navy Band.

At Barry’s request, I arranged the concerto for alto saxophone and piano for performance at the 2011 Australian Clarinet & Saxophone Festival, Melbourne, VIC, Australia.

The title of the work is intended to suggest the rapid, free-flowing and often highly chromatic melodies played by the saxophone soloist. The title also reveals something of the inspiration behind the music and my current fascination with all things nautical.

Flying Colours commences with music of a bright and vigorous nature. The strong pulse heard at the introduction is maintained and serves to drive the narrative of the whole work. Weaving in and around the band / piano part, the soloist’s florid melodic lines are composed of ordered, balanced phrases. This is in keeping with the ‘crazy logic’ style of some of my previous works for saxophone in which ‘crazy’ melodic intervals are shaped into ‘logical’ or symmetrical sentences.

I warmly thank Barry Cockcroft and the United States Navy Band for giving the world premiere performance of the work, and also warmly thank Barry Cockcroft and Adam Pinto (rompduo) for their premiere performance of the sax and piano score.

Roundabout (for solo violin, 2002) is a piece characterised by a playful, yet nervous energy. The title describes the manner in which the bars and phrases of music frequently “loop-the-loop” before taking off in a new direction. When composing the piece, I made use of a variety of violin performance techniques such as rapid-fire bowing of semiquavers and the alternating of bowed notes with left hand pizzicato. This brings a percussive vigour and a colourful mix of timbres to the narrative of the work.

Performed live by Grainger Wind Symphony

White horses (for symphonic wind ensemble) was commissioned by Reed Music in 2008 with financial assistance from the Australia Council. While writing the music, I was inspired by thoughts of a rugged, rough-and-tumble seascape, with fresh, salt-laden winds transforming waves into myriad white horses.

The music begins and ends with plenty of triplets which provide an energetic mood and strong, forward impetus. The middle section of the work draws further on water imagery with the sounds of bubbling water scored in and around the instrumental music. - MO

This piece, a flight of fancy for flute and piano, comprises three sections, each lasting about a minute or so.

The first section kicks off in an energetic and cheerful way with the bright, upper registers of both instruments at play. Also evident in the opening section are ideas such as angular melodic lines played in unison, a little harp-like piano accompaniment texture and a contrasting theme fashioned atop a jazzy, dance-inspired bassline.

The middle section of the work is perhaps the more unearthly music of the work. Little updrafts and whirlwinds of tinkling, glockenspiel-like piano figurations add a haunting quality to a chromatically inflected flute melody, evoking, for me, images of night and a kind of magic.

The final section of the piece – which brings us back to earth with its recapitulation of earlier material – is characterised by the soun
