Composer’s Note:
The inspiration for Roadtrip comes from the train commute I make weekly from Sydney to a university teaching job in Newcastle. I really enjoy the landscapes I encounter on this journey and the way that they evolve; urban, suburban, mountainous bush land tumbling down into the Hawkesbury River. The train clings to the shoreline around Brisbane Waters, sparkling beautifully in the morning sunshine, then snakes through more bush land, cuts through suburbia and finally emerges into the industrial steel heart of Newcastle.
Roadtrip is, simply put, a motivic evolution, a very simple four note motive that continually evolves and extends and transforms itself, in much the same way as the landscape evolves around the silver bullet of a train hurtling down the tracks.
