Reed Music is proud to support a performance of renown French saxophonist Claude Delangle in a performance at the University of Melbourne.
Soloist, researcher and pedagogue, Claude Delangle, one of the greatest contemporary saxophonists, stands out as the master of the French saxophone. Privileged interpreter for classic works, he enriches the repertoire and encourages creation by collaborating with the most renowned composers, including L. Berio, P. Boulez, Toru Takemitsu, A. Piazzolla, and promoting the youngest. Since 1986, he is invited saxophonist in the Ensemble Intercontemporain, he also appears as soloist with the most prestigious orchestras (London BBC, Radio France, Radio of Finland, WDR Köln, Berlin Philharmonic, Kioi Tokyo) and works with D. Robertson, P. Eötvös, K. Nagano, E.P. Salonen, Miung Wung Chung, G. Bernstein and many other conductors.
He is also invited to important festivals such as the Zagreb Bienniale , Présences of Radio France or the Musica Nova Festival . The Festival Musica of Strasbourg invited him recently to offer the world premiere of the programme “ Tango Futur ”, interpreted afterwards at the Festival Aix en Musique and at the Theatre of the Palais Royal in Paris.
Passionate for his instrument, he goes beyond the work of the soloist and frequents the Musical Acoustic Laboratories of the University of Paris 7. The results of his research on specific acoustics of the saxophone will be for him a precious asset in his collaboration with composers.
His recordings for BIS, Deutsche Grammophon, Harmonia Mundi, Erato and Verany bring out French music while revealing new musical horizons from the repertoire created by the brilliant Adolphe Sax to the avant-garde works or the popular repertoire.
After obtaining several outstanding Premiers Prix at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique of Paris , Claude Delangle was appointed professor in 1988, where he has created the most prestigious saxophone class in the world. Pupils of all nationalities long to receive this education, which combines concerts with the possibility of studying with important composers and offers a large range of interdisciplinary activities. In Europe, North America, South America, Australia and Asia, Claude Delangle is requested for interpretation courses.
He is currently in charge of a collection at the Henri-Lemoine-Paris publications, where he works for the publishing of new repertoires and for the republishing of classic works, not forgetting, however, the publication of pedagogical works.
During this season 2003-2004 Asia will welcome Claude Delangle four times: in Japan he will perform in a tour with the Metropolitan Tokyo Symphony, in Hong Kong with the City Chamber Orchestra, in Singapore he will record for BIS the great concertos of the repertoire with the Symphonic Orchestra of Singapore and will give recitals in China. He is also planning the premiere of Trame 1 by Martin Matalon at the Arsenal in Metz, a tour of recitals in Central America in July and concerts with the orchestras of Saint Petersburg and Novossibirsk in September. The strong point of his Parisian season will be the Festival Agora in June, for which he has been given carte blanche by the IRCAM (Institute of musical acoustics research and coordination).

Celebrating the launch of their new books, Australian composers Adam Pinto, Barry Cockcroft & Sam Seabrook took part in a 2-day series of presentations at Winston Music in Adelaide.
On Thursday 24th January 2008, Adam Pinto gave an fascinating presentation talking about the release of his 3 new books - My Favourite Piano Tutor Books 1, 2 & 3. Adam talked at length about the development process of these books. Adam recently returned from 3 months at the Banff Centre for the Arts where much of the creative process took place. He also gave a compelling performance of selected works from 'Fragments of Gratification', a collection of 20 Australian miniatures for solo piano.
Sam Seabrook, Australian composer talked with great enthusiasm about her new band method, Band Class 1. This new 3-year method is written specifically for Australian school programs and is ideal for use in the classroom. One of the most innovative features is the way that the notes are introduced. Flutes start on A, Bb & C and will no longer have to struggle with the awkward D, Eb & F that many teachers will be familiar with. Other instruments are kept to manageable ranges, such as trumpet that plays a 1-octave range from C to C.
Barry Cockcroft spoke about the prevalence of Australian composers now writing for younger players. Leading composers, who may have previously written only more advanced music are now using their talents to create skillful works for school aged players. With Adam Pinto, rompduo performed some new pieces by John Barrett, Taran Carter and one of Barry's own compositions.

Australia's Champion Band, the North West Wind Ensemble records CD of My Favourite Band.
Conducted by well-known musician James Brice, the North West Wind Ensemble has completed a 72 track recording of Sam Seabrook's unique Australian band method. Available on CD or as a free download the recording is an excellent resource for students using My Favourite Band as a play-along CD. As a reference for developing accurate intonation and rhythm, this new recording will be useful for years to come. For providing a great venue, a special thanks goes to Noel Simmons, Director of the Castel Hill R.S.L. where the CD was recorded.
The Castle Hill RSL North West Wind Ensemble was established in 2004 to provide musicians with the opportunity to play an advanced repertoire of modern concert band music. The band consists of around 50 amateur and professional musicians from around Sydney. The band has had stunning success at State and National Championships and is building a wide repertoire. The band has an Open A competition grading.
Conductor James Brice was educated at the University of Melbourne, where he completed a Bachelor of Education, majoring in music education, conducting, instrumental performance and drama. He has studied conducting with Barry Bignell for three years, in which time James was appointed the Musical Director of the Moorabbin Brass Band, Head of Brass Studies at St. Leonard's College and also conducted the University of Melbourne Wind Orchestra.
After moving to Sydney in 1996 to accept the Principal euphonium/trombone position with the Royal Australian Air Force Air Command Band, James has worked extensively as a conducting and brass clinician, working with The Hills Music Academy, Holroyd Brass, City of Wollongong Brass Band, Crestwood Primary School Bands and Kellyville Public School Bands to name a few. He is currently the Musical Director of the Macquarie Towns Orchestra and in addition, James teaches many tuba and euphonium students in the Hills area.
James was appointed the Musical Director of the Castle Hill RSL Youth Band and the North West Wind Ensemble in April 2005. He proudly led both bands to 'A Grade Championship' success, in both Junior and Open fields, at the 2006 Australian National Band Championships in Brisbane. In addition to this, the CHRSL Youth Band was awarded 1st place honours in the ANZAC Day march, taking out the Youth and Cadet Section, for the second consecutive year.
In the R.A.A.F Air Command Band James performs regularly on euphonium, trombone, bass trombone and tuba. James has also attained his A Mus A on euphonium with Distinction in 1993, upgrading this to a Licentiate Diploma in 1995, being the first euphonium player to attain this diploma in Australia. To further promote the euphonium and the repertoire written for the instrument, James recorded and produced his own solo euphonium CD, Symphonic Variants for Euphonium in 1995.
Since then James has also attained his AMusA on Tuba in 1998, performed with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
